The challenge
The author came to us with a clearly formed concept for a novel and some 20,000 words of poor-quality draft. The chronology was chaotic, the research was in different notes, and the author himself did not understand whether the work was worth publishing.
What we did
After completing a structural edit, we crafted the revised timeline and created an easy three-act structure. We then had our editor work through the chapters one by one to incorporate the historical facts into the story seamlessly, rather than having them dump down in chunks, preserve the author's voice, and point out the two side stories that were drawing attention away from the main storyline.
The result
A book that is publication-ready historical fiction that the author can be proud of putting his name on, and a debut that feels like the work of a veteran.
